Undelete tips
The following undelete tips help you to increase your chances of recovering deleted files.
How to increase the chance of files recovery
When you delete a file from your computer using the 'Delete' option and even if you emptied the Recycle Bin or formatted your drive, Windows removes the references to the file and file's space is marked as free so the system can re-use it but file's contents, even though you cannot see the file, remains on a drive until this area of the drive is overwritten by another file. So it is possible to undelete deleted files until they have been overwritten.
To improve the probability of data recovery, first of all, stop any activity on the drive you are going to undelete files from such as writing new data, installing or running programs that could use the drive space.
If undelete software is installed prior to the file being deleted, your chances of recovery are greatly increased as you can immediately undelete files after deletion. If you do not yet have an undelete tool installed on your computer, avoid installing it to the drive with lost files as it increases the risk of your data being overwritten.

For the system drive
Avoid using your system drive for any tasks that may directly or indirectly write new data on the system drive as it could cause overwriting the lost data and reduce chances of undeleting. The less you use your computer before undeleting, the better your chances of getting your files back.
- Disconnect the computer from the Internet or a LAN, turn off Wi-Fi, etc.
- Close all running programs, including programs running in the background such as anti-virus software, Automatic Updates, etc. as Windows could overwrite the deleted files when it needs to create new files.
- Avoid installing new software, including Undelete Deleted Files, on any drive on the computer as in this case the system disk will be used indirectly.
- Don't burn data to CD or DVD drives as while burning data Windows creates temporary files and the system disk is in use
- Recover files to another disk or partition.
To undelete files you may install Undelete Deleted Files on a removable drive or use the version that does not require installation and can be run from a flash drive. To download the program, you should use another computer.
For a hard drive
To increase the chance of files recovery, you should immediately stop all computer activities that may reduce chances of recovery by writing new data on a hard drive containing lost files:
Close all running programs as each time Windows writes information on a hard drive your chances to undelete files are decreased.
Do not install any programs on this drive as it may overwrite deleted files
Do not save recovered files to the same drive
For a removable drive (USB, flash drive, memory stick, sd card, etc.)
You should immediately stop writing data to the drive with the lost data as new data could overwrite the files you need to undelete.
Where you should save undeleted files
To avoid overwriting data you need to undelete, save undeleted files to a different drive.
